Storywork through gardening

From June to October, 2023, the youth and research team of YARI-Collective planted and cared for a living garden installation. Throughout the summer, youth transplanted seedlings, watered their plants, harvested herbs and veggies to take home to their families, created art inspired by their time in the garden, and shared stories of gardens they have left behind.

naming our garden

Our garden goes by many names; one name could not possibly hold all of the many relationships and meanings formed within the garden. Each name emerged from time spent in the garden together throughout the summer and captures the variety of sentiments the garden has inspired, among them peace, hope, nostalgia, longing, grief, joy, and curiosity.

Rootings: Reimagining gardens left behind

Open-day at the garden, titled “Rootings: Reimagining gardens left behind” was on 2nd and 3rd of September, where the Collective showed the visitors what they have planted and cared for over the summer, and re-told the stories they gathered and remembered of their home/lands while gardening

as the garden goes to sleep …

An exhibition of artwork co-designed by the youth centered around their experiences of gardening, titled As The Garden Goes to Sleep, was hosted by the Alcove Centre for the Arts from September 24th to October 11th.
